Default Vonage up and working in Manila

I sent a Linksys PAP2 to Manila over the Holidays. Over all it's working well but the sound quality could be better. They have a dsl with 128K which seems to be the problems.

The DSL provider is PLDT which hates voip and I was suprised they didn't have that port blocked.

why are you encouraging vonage vs BYOD providers that are much cheaper and do not lock the device is beyond me.

I orginally tried Broadvoice but the voice quality was awful. I needed something simple for family members to use without any kind of troubleshooting or playing aroud via an international phone call. I got the PAP2 at BestBuy, and within 5 minutes I had it working.

I got them the 14.95 monthly plan and I'll save ton on long distance over the next year. Next year if Broadvoice gets it's act together, I might go with them or someone else with more international plans.

Congratulations on getting a solution together that your family can manage and enjoy. There is a lot of comfort to be had in knowing that Vonage is responsible for remotely tweaking your parents' ATA to maximize the voice quality in the face of PLDT's varying service levels. Assuming that you chose a phone number that is local to you in the US, they can call you and you can return their call so that they do not eat up their limited minutes too quickly.
