Default Configuring the Linksys SPA962, SPA942, or SPA941 to use DNS SRV records

Making host changes to every phone on your network can be a real pain. Even pushing new provisioning configurations to your phones can take time. Fortunately, the SPA941 and SPA942 understand DNS SRV records. Now you can make your changes in one place, and all your phones still know how to register with the right server, find backup servers, and route calls.

This How-to is based on version 4.1.12(a) of the IP Phone software. Your environment must have DNS SRV records already configured for these changes to work. Please see this forum thread for DNS SRV record information.

To configure DNS SRV lookups:
  1. Log into your IP Phone as Admin and select the Advanced option or enter http://ipaddress/admin/advanced into your web browser. See other posts for information on how to find your IP Phone’s IP address.
  2. Go to the Ext 1, Ext 2, Ext 3, Ext 4, Ext 5, or Ext 6 tab.
  3. Make the following changes in the Proxy and Registration section:
    • Change the Proxy field value to your domain, from sipserver.voxilla.com to voxilla.com for example.
    • Change Use DNS SRV to Yes.
    • Change DNS SRV Auto Prefix to Yes.
    • Change Proxy Redundancy Method to Based on SRV Port.
  4. Save your configuration changes.
When the IP Phone reboots, it will use DNS to lookup the SIP server and register.
