Stay AWAY from MyLowPhone! I had problems from day one.
To begin, during the sign-up process, I selected their least-expensive plan, 500 minutes free, then 4 cents a minute for overage, at $9.99 a month----SUPPOSEDLY. What they don't say up-front is that this is a teaser rate that only lasts three months. After that, it goes up to $14.99 a month.
During the on-site sign up, the figures were adding up wrong. The total did not match the itemized charges. I did not complete the process, and instead sent a query email to MyLowPhone sales. The response was that they were having difficulty with the website. At this point they have corrected the problem, but it pays to ACTUALLY READ everything very carefully if you ever go to their site. They blithely wave off serious flaws as "technical problems" they are "working on". I think that if a website is miscalculating billing, it should be SHUT DOWN until it works right, but apparently they don't give a ***.
(Note: the billing page asked for a coupon code, which I didn't have. I was later told that the code is "setupisfree" which waives the $10 setup fee)
The next problem I experienced, after giving out my number to family and friends, (and putting it on resumes) was that they had issued me a number that belongs to a Real Estate Company!
I was surprised to get these weird messages from people in my voice mail box, and I called a couple of them to find out what was going on. A quick Google search confirmed that these people were not misdialing.....my phone number IS associated with an apartment-rental Real Estate company. During the next few weeks I also got a call from a restaraunt I had never heard of, trying to reach someone to confirm a reservation, and from a woman looking for a social services agency.
MyLowPhone is great at making excuses. They claim that they draw their numbers from a pool that is supposed to be unused numbers, and implied that the calls must be arriving, not because the number is still assigned to someone else, but simply because people are finding it in old ads or phone books. Well, that doesn't really explain the variety of calls I get thinking that I am three different things, does it?
Can you imagine having to call up all the people you know, give them your new number....then have to repeat the process three weeks later? Can you imagine how much of a fool it would make you look like to have to contact potential employers and say that the phone number on your resume is wrong?
Besides all this, about once a day, someone calls, and just hangs up. Who knows why.
Next problem....voice quality SUCKS IMMENSELY. Echo, choppiness, lag, faint.
Of course, MyLowPhone blamed this upon me....they claim that I don't have enough bandwidth. Well, that's crap, because my previous VOIP provider worked just fine with this bandwidth (in case you're wondering, I dropped the old VOIP provider because every month they were making "mistakes" on my bill....literally stealing from my bank account)
Next problem: Caller ID is one of the included services. It DOESN"T WORK, at all. All numbers (including from my parents and girlfriend, who don't have Caller ID blocking show up as "Unknown Name/Number". On the rinky-dink "unified messaging" (evidently third-party, it looks like cheap shareware) voicemail page, ALL my voice messages are showing up as "Private Number" or " #000000"....now ask yourself this: would a RESTARAUNT have an unlisted number???
As usual, MyLowPhone tries to weasel out, claiming that the problem has to be with my phone equipment. Okay.....so I take it over to my girlfriends' house, and test it. Nope, works fine with HER Caller ID.
Worst of all, the MyLowPhone modem kept knocking off my internet connection. I spent an entire day disconnecting and reconnecting wires, hassling my cable internet company. When I finally just took the MyLowPhone modem out of the loop, my cable internet connection came back immediately, and it was suddenly blazingly fast!
The MyLowPhone modem will either knock you offline, or slow down your internet browsing SIGNIFIGANTLY. I got back online and got back my dialtone....after wasting a day of my life, and now I have to put up with browsing lag.
I got a personal phone call on a Sunday from a worker (presumably an executive) at MyLowPhone, which was encouraging. He stated that the problem would be fixed the following week. Two weeks later, and things are just as bad as ever. I asked this person for a refund to compensate me for the trouble I experienced, and he said that was the responsibility of "Billing". I've sent numerous messages to "Billing" asking to be compensated for their shitty service, and they've completely ignored me.
