My ATA adapter is temporarily offline and I am wondering what rules govern expiration of my IPKall number. I recall from the past that it would expire after 30 days of inactivity (although I cannot find this rule anymore on the IPKall pages). Does anybody know the specifics? Is it sufficient that I log on to my account at www.ipkall.com? Is it sufficient if I put the ATA online for some time now? Or do I have to place a call via PSTN to my IPKall number? I will appreciate the info. Thanks, Konrad
I would suggest regularly dialing into your IPKALL number and answering the call, plus logging in and out of IPKALL's website. This way you can be sure your number is active. Just turning on your telephone adapter doesn't do anything to tell IPKALL that "you're still alive." I believe IPKALL makes an itty bit of money each time your number is called in to, so that's how the service is provided for free.
IPKall is part of International Telecom Ltd, a Seattle-based CLEC. They make a small amount of money on incoming calls.
Thank you for the replies. I have 2 quick questions: 1. Is it necesseary to both log on and get an incoming call? 2. Just purely out of curiousity - how can the provider make money on such incoming calls?
1. Since there is no such thing as logging on to IPKall's SIP switch, the only way to keep active is to receive calls regularly. 2. This discussed in great detail in another thread, but the simple answer is that the company that bills the chargeable party for the call will split those pennies with each endpoint and transport phone company that handles the call.
Regarding IPKall numbers Expiring. Rules of thumb for ALL IPKall users; IPKall Numbers are recycled if; If the assign number doesn't have any answered in a 30 day period. If the email on sign up is returned "undeliverable" If you abuse the IPKall numbers pool in any fashion. FYI there are over 10k of active IPKall users all over the world, lets try and keep it free for all by following these simple rules. IPKall
Does the call have to be answered by someone to keep the IPKall number active, or is it enough to let the voicemail pickup the call ?
How do I know if the number is expired? I haven't called my number in a while (not sure if exceeded 30 days or not) and today when I tried calling I got a busy tone and my asterisk is not receiving any SIP packets. However, I am still able to login via the website. So is my number expired or not? Thanks!
same thing is happening to me.....so I guess we are not alone there must be something wrong with ipkall and the link between then and free world dialup Muheeb
Re: Regarding IPKall numbers Expiring. Great rules. Great service. Thank you. What kind of things would be considered 'abuse'? I want to help ensure the service continues, not hurt it. If I understand correctly, inbound minutes are good for you. What kind of things do you frown on?
Just give your number to a telemarketer. I'm sure they'll call you every day and keep your line active.

Can ipkall please clarify on how to maintain their numbers when their ata adapter will be offline for over a month? I'm going to be away and since there's no voicemail I'm not sure what constitutes as keeping the number active? I have had my number over a year so I don't want to lose it. Thank you for any clarification.
Get a VoIP account at some place that has voicemail, like voxalot or gizmo5.com. Point your ipkall number at that account. Call your ipkall number every week or two, and leave yourself a voicemail.
