Default Skype - ATA or SoftPhone?

Does Skype operate with an ATA or a softphone? How about Vonage?

Why not use an open SIP provider?

Skype does things their own way, instead of using the standards that much of the (rest of the) industry uses.

There are a few Skype branded hardware units coming out, but they are noticably more expensive than the standard SIP equipment. And furthermore, the Skype equipment won't work with anyone else either (as it's all just Skype).

As to softphones, Skype will only work with their branded software, not a generic softphone.

Vonage uses standard SIP equipment, but they have it setup to only work with their "locked" VoIP adapters. To use Vonage with anything else (your own adapter, or a softphone), you need to pay extra for Vonage's "softphone" add-on to your service.

NOTE: Not only is the Vonage "SoftPhone" option an extra monthly fee, but it also (unlike the main Vonage service) has a limited number of minutes before you start "paying by the minute".

BTW: I used to have Vonage, and dropped them due to some of their fees, and other "hidden charges". These days, Vonage is just the most advertised VoIP solution, not the best (nor the cheapest)...

Exactly! No, I knew they were restrictive. My brother-in-law uses Skype. He ought to know better as his son is a telecom executive.
