Default How To Verify sipXvxml installation

Dear All,
I've just started studing VOIP and for the first try, I've downloaded and installed sipXvxml (along with all libraries it need). As I'm truly novice to VOIP, I don't know how I can verify if my sipXvxml is working fine or not. To be more precise, I want to know:
[note: my install base is Fedora Core III, on a P4 Intel notebook]
1) If I need any special hardware to test sipXvxml with a soft phone
2) If I need to run sipXvxml with a superuser account, or an ordinary account will suffice
3) Apart from sipXvxml and all libraries it needs to be compiled and run, and of course a softphone, should I install another application
4) At the softphone, which account should I call

Note that as I was trying to provide just a basic test environment, I didn't run any SIP server (proxy, registrar, locator, etc), assuming that IP address of the callee is known.

I'll really appreciate if anybody can give me the answers I need, or point me to document/web page which I can find the answers.

Sorry if I'm missing some important points, but as newcomer to VOIP I don't know many things!!

Thanks in advance,
