Default Telephone & Phonegnome box - Setup issue.

I received phonegnome device last week. Tried to do the setup with the following instructions (mailed from phonegnome),

In order to complete the international setup process please follow
the steps below:
1. Lift the handset of your PhoneGnome phone (ignore the unusual dialtone, if any).
2. Dial **468
3. When prompted, enter the following PIN code:xxxx.

When I dial **468, I hear DISCONNECT tone only. There is no prompt as such. I mailed to phonegnome support about this. They mailed me as below,

You may need to check the adapter between the Phonebox PHONE port and your telephone, or the telephone itself (or use a US phone).
The reason the phone/adapter matters is because the PhoneGnome box
is not sensing the digits you are dialing. It does not see you
dialing **468 at all - it is seeing only someone dialing 8

As I am in Japan, I am not sure what type of phone I have to connect now ? I do not know how the US telephone devices differ from the telephone devices in Japan.

Does PhoneGnome support only certain telephone devices? If so, could you please list them what are they?

Appreciate any help on this.
