PhoneGnome is an unknown quantity at this point
Default PhoneGnome adds SMS sending

PhoneGnome now enables you to send SMS to any mobile phone in the world: this is a very convenient feature and it is inexpensive too. Sending an SMS to USA costs 8.2c, to Canada costs 7.6c, to UK is 11.5c, Japan 7.6c, India 7.6c, Italy 7.6c (currency is US dollars).

To send SMS, click the SMS tab and type the recipient’s number in the proper field. The recipient doesn’t need to be a PhoneGnome user.

You can also send SMS by clicking the SMS action icon shown under actions for the contact on your contacts page. The SMS action icon is shown for any contact that is designated as a Mobile number.

Why would anyone pay for SMS to US? You can and and always could send text messages for free using email for example to all US cell phones because the underlying technology evelved differently there.

For Europe, for example, there is no such option and I use Nonoh.net for SMS there but it is still expensive at 3 cents per SMS. Does anyone here uses something reliable but less expensive -- like 1 cent or less per SMS?

While it's true, if thinking only about cost, sending SMS to international numbers is going to be the first application one thinks of with the PhoneGnome SMS feature.

However, a few reasons for using the service to send U.S. SMS include: faster and more reliable delivery - the email to SMS gateways can be notoriously slow and unreliable.

Secondly, with the PhoneGnome SMS, your message has your cell phone number so the recipient knows who it is and their replies go directly to your cell phone.

Finally, there is simply the convenience. Sometimes the convenience of popping off a message out without jumping over to the email client and searching for the right email gateway address etc. is worth a few pennies.

If you are familiar with Nonoh.net you can try one of the other many flavors of Betamax that gives you more SMS for free or low cost. I have used several flavors myself and right now I use Nonoh for mostly free calls to landlines in Europe and very cheap rates to mobiles there but for free/extremely low cost SMS to Europe I use Voipcheap. Also I use some of the free minutes fon Voipcheap or free calls to Europe.

I am sure if you compare the different flavors of Betamax you will find at least few flavors that offer something for SMS sending that is hard to beat anywhere.

The cost obviously is shocking to me because as a matter of principle I stopped paying such high rates for text messages in the mid 90s and I did not even know anyone is still paying anything for text messges to US numbers.

For the US I always get all my text messaging (unlimited) from my mobile provider and when I need to send something more elaborate from the computer I use email or a free gateway. For international text messaging right now I use Voipcheap since it gives me all my unlimited text messaging almost anyuwhere in the world and about 300 minutes free landline use per week for about $3 per month.

A lot of people seem to like Skype SMS and our PhoneGnome SMS service is certainly price competitive with that service - and easy and handy to use right from your My PhoneGnome web login.
