Exclamation OK, let's get this "free" thing straight.

Ok, I understand that if you call VoIP to VoIP (whether it be SIP phone to SIP phone, or SIP to software phone), and both have the phonegnome clients, the calls will be free.

However, I am still a little sketchy on the web dialer thing;

if my friend (who lives in Australia) registers his cell phone with phonegnome, and I register my cellphone with phonegnome....

Then I can use the web dialer to dial his cellphone number, my cellphone will ring, and so will his; we'll both pick up and be talking to each other (him for free, and I will only be using up minutes).

Is my thinking correct? If so, how can this service be offered for "free"? Also, are there any hidden limitations?

The phone number you reigster is attached to the device and will ring the device. Basically it lik e(it may be the same thing I am not sure what they use) as Welcome to e164.org When another phone system uses their system to look up phone numbers and your phone number is in the database along with the internet address, it will forward your call over the internet, if it is not, then your call will use the path that it normally does, in the case of phonegnome it will use your regular phone line unless you have purchased their calling out service which might be cheaper.

You could also do the same thing with 2 2 Line Grandstream 386 units for about $80 and program it with 2 gizmoproject.com accounts. However, that being said, PhoneGnome does make it easy for people who just want to plug and go.

PhoneGnome is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Re: OK, let's get this "free" thing straight.

I don't think AUS mobiles are included in the free set, but your friend can try their number and see (sometimes numbers will work even if that area is not listed). Obviously, they can install the box in AUS and then that number is free. The "free countries" only applies to the web-only free accounts. Free countries are listed here: Qualifying International Numbers

Customers of these "free" web-only accounts must sign into their My PhoneGnome portal and use the service occasionally to keep their account active. No purchase is required. The PhoneGnome offer of free web-activated calls are subject to reasonable use. Most users won't notice any limit - we just have to be able to prevent abuse of the offer. However, calls between PhoneGnome members using the PhoneGnome box are always free.

For details, see the terms of use: PhoneGnome :: License Terms and Conditions of Use Agreement

Ok, thanks for the information; I'll definitely be checking this out.

Also, do you know what the "reasonable limit" is?
