Default Zoom versus Linksys/Sipura

Here is a list of Zoom's ATA line-up. I think they will be giving Linksys/Sipura, and other ATA manufacturers, a run for the money.

Unless they can get service providers on board, which is where the true volume in this business is, it will be just another VoIP adapter.

the zoom FXO ports are unusable with asterisk at the moment. still waiting for zoom to fix their firmware.

The "router" device quite simply wasn't usable in my environment. The ATA functionality is adequate. I have one of the FXO port models, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

zoom does not support voip->fxo yet. all voip calls to the zoom get routed to the fxs, and there is no option to change routing. the firmware release notes explicitly state this -- "voip to fxo is not supported".

calls into the fxo port get dumped into a second dialtone where you end up with ip dialing. there is no control over this, and there is no direct fxo->voip routing yet. so it is largely useless for fxo->asterisk routing also.

the promised t.38 support does not exist yet.

in short, the zooms are completely useless as FXOs right now. maybe a future firmware will fix this, but it is very strange to release a product and advertise it as "works with asterisk!" without supporting even this very basic functionality.

I guess I was mistaken. Is this company being run by engineers? It doesn't sound like it.

the zoom FXS support is also very basic. if you want an FXS with good functionality you'd be better off buying a sipura.

maybe these issues will be fixed in the future with firmware releases, but as the product stands now, I cannot recommend them for use with asterisk. i put mine back in its box and it's currently sitting in the closet waiting for a firmware release to make the FXO useful.

but then, I guess one shouldn't expect a lot from a $60 ata.

these ATAs don't really seem designed for end users, most of the settings are undocumented, even in zoom's "service provider documentation". they seem to be designed as pre-configured ATAs bundled for use with zoom's global village service. zoom shouldn't have bothered selling unbundled devices to end users until they had the firmware ready.

Usagi, where do you get the firmware release notes and firmware as I thought the Zoom ATA only downloads it directly from the Global Village server?

I'm interest in the Zoom 5801 ATA, can anyone who owns 1 tell me if the power adaptor aupplied is a 110V only or a universial one 110 - 240V type. Thanks a lot!
