| I'm thinking around 3 thousand in the first phase using various codecs, from GSM to Gu711, with some user agents with reinvite enabled to get my server out of the picture after the call setup. I want to be able to expand though. |

| Are you planning to charge money for this service? If so, you probably do not want to enable REINVITE, since this will remove the ability for your billing module to do its job properly. If you're still interested you'll need 160kbps in each direction for each G.711 conversation and 80kbps for each GSM conversation. So, for 3000 simultaneous conversations you will need anywhere from 240Mbps to 480Mbps of bandwidth from your ISP. If you have a healthy percentage of GSM users you should be able to start out with 384Mbps Fiber Optic service and grow to 512Mbps and beyond as your business grows.

| Interesting article, but how do I get Saunders to send me the money he purports to be saving me? "Compared to traditional TDM based systems, they are ten times less expensive to build." Let's see - If I can buy a TDM for $150,000 and Asterisk is ten times less expensive... $150,000 - cost of TDM minus (ten times $150,000) - "ten times less expensive" equals... Saunders owes me $1,350,000 for every Asterisk system I build. I like this deal. Where can I collect? Methinks he meant to say that Asterisk costs one tenth as much to build.

The SIP registration isn't that taxing, in terms of bandwidth and CPU. A three or four server cluster could do this. The problem providers see in deployments is that many or most customers will need NAT traversal, making REINVITE an unrealistic option for keeping overhead down. Proxying the media traffic is much more intensive and significantly reduces the number of simultaneous sessions per cluster member. It's difficult to estimate the utilization requirements without more information. Server requirements are really going to be dependent on the software you decide on. Another issue to consider is that many of the high compression codecs are licensed and not available for free. In any case, I would recommend selecting a solution that scales with minimal effort, so you can start small and add cluster members and storage as the population grows. |
