Default Nokia E70 SIP capabilities

Anyone having any experience with using SIP with WLAN or mobile GPRS/3G services.

I am running the latest firmware (v3.......) and I have been able to get my the built-in SIP capability of the phone to work within my home network on the WLAN. However, I could not get this to work with a SIP client outside of my home network.

I also cannot get this to work at all over GPRS/3G.

However, I found that I can connect using a free software called FRING but this is not reliable (in the sense that it worked 1 out of 4 times I tried today).

It almost seems that the built-in SIP has a problem with NAT traversal. FRING appears to have gotten around this but not reliably.

as of recently I'm a proud owner of a Noke E65 and I LOVE it. Currently I'm traveling in Mexico and extensively use the WiFi to connect to my asterisk server at home from the Hotels. It works perfectly fine. NAT settings (if you have any) at home are important though. I recommend reading the NAT and Asterisk article on voip-info.org.

Using the SIP client with EGPRS gave me too much latency and I wasn't really successful in using this on regular basis.

I am also using Fring and with EGPRS I was amazed to see that it works.

I was not able to use UMTS yet as in the United States they only have 1900 MHz UMTS at select locations and the E65 only supports 2100 MHz UMTS.

In general though I'm very satisfied with this phone.

Cybertoy,
I live in Mexico. I just set up a trixbox and it is really working super sweet. Let me see if I understand. You are using your asterisk server over the internet on your phone? You can travel in Mexico and use FRING and get nice quality calls over this setup?

I am looking to have calls come into my asterisk server, then they get forwarded to my extension and I can answer on a SIP cell phone. I am NOWHERE near any wifi, but I get a great internet signal.

I am kind of new to this stuff. I just expained this to a friend of mine and he was really excited about getting some SIP over cell.

Thanks for any info.
-James

Hi,

I think you're confusing some things. Here's some clarification:

- My asterisk box is setup so that my SIP devices and register both at home or from anywhere on the internet. I have static IP's and run my own DNS server with a domain in order to accomplish that. Maybe with some tweaking this can be done using DynDns.org or a similar service. As I mentioned in the previous post NAT settings are essential as with SIP you will get one-way or no voice at all.

- EGPRS did not work in Mexico. I haven't tried that too much though as I don't have a good data plan on the phone where this would be economic. In the US I have a flat rate plan and no matter how much data I use I don't pay more. Through WiFi though I was able to use FRING.

ciao,

Cybertoy

Thanks for clarifying. I am thinking that the best option down here is to go with some GSM gateway.

Gracias, James
