If I had a Wi Fi capable phone and wanted to use a VoIP app on it like Skype to make and receive calls without using my minutes can't you use your own wi fi router to send Skype over the net through your broadband connection? THANKS

Skype is a special case in that Skype doesn't use industry standard sip like others. Equipment has to be specifically engineered to use Skype and there is such equipment however I am not sure there is a cell phone that will also use Skype.

I was only using Skype as an example, there are many VoIP mobile applications besides Skype... What are you talking about? Here is Skype's mobile site: http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/ Skype works on like 50 cellphones... Maybe you are thinking about something else, I'm talking about VoIP SOFTWARE on cellphones... fring: http://www.fring.com/ Nimbuzz: http://www.nimbuzz.com/ iskoot: http://www.iskoot.com/ So I"m talking about putting VoIP software on a cellphone that has wi fi capability and talking for free over VoIP and not using minutes... Ok we on the same page now? So back to my original question now... fring is the best looking so far, and what I was asking is if I had my own wi fi router with a wi fi capable phone could I just use it without any special plans, just a basic cellphone plan? I just thought if someone had a broadband conneciton with their own wi fi router, and with their cellphone on a regular plan they could access the wi fi connection and then with the VoIP software on the phone make calls out without the need for a VoIP plan like the T-mobile@home... THANKS Last edited by DasFox : July 28th, 2008 at 11:30 AM.

Yes! I use my iPhone with Sipgate's free downloadable software and can make calls via wifi through my own router - or any other. www.sipgate.co.uk I find it much better than Fring which is also available for the iPhone. Clive

Yes. you can add mobile wifi to your cell phone and not add any special plans to your cellular plan. That's the strength of wifi-sip calling. In fact, you can lower your cellular plan and make wifi calls which saves money. If you make cellular internet calls, that will require a data plan from your provider. However, if you use wifi hotspots, your calls never cross your cell operators cellular network. check out http://www.2enetworks.vpweb.com for full explanations of how it works. You only need a VoIP sip account and a dual mode(wifi/cellular) cell phone to make it work. Lower cellular plans saves money!!!!!!!

However, since Fring routes ALL traffic through their own servers, the quiality can be quite crap. As for the original poster's question, you can use your own WIFI router or any open WIFI connection for that matter - or if your cell phone supports it, any WIFI hot-spot that you can log-into - although your results may vary, mine have been quite crappy service on all of them at Starbucks and McDonalds - its as if hey buy the 768K up and down DSL package and have several people share it.
