Unhappy SPA942 + Screen Saver = No Dialtone

SPA942 with firmware 5.2.2a

- Enable the screen saver (selected DateTime as the saver icon)
- When screen saver activates, pick up the handset and there is no dial tone.
- Hit the speaker button and dial tone is played; handset also wakes up.

Problem reproducible every time. Real nice bug!

That's no bug - it's explicitly stated to work that way.
You have to "press a button, or lift the handset" to bring the phone out of screen saver mode.
That first action (pressing a button, or lifting the handset) is not interpreted in any way other than, bring the phone out of screen saver mode.

It just takes a bit of getting used to.

I have got in the habit of 1st pressing the * button when I want to "wake up" my SPA942. Thereafter it works perfectly normally.

Even with the inconvenience of the above, I still like the new screen saver function on the SPA phones.

Uh .... that's what I said ... "pick up the handset" would be the same as "lift the handset". When I pickup/lift the handset there is no dial tone until some other button is pushed. I certainly can't interpret that as a design feature. The action of going off-hook should be enough to take it out of screen saver mode and dial tone to be played to the handset.

Besides screen saver should only affect the screen. Why would a "screen saver" function put the handset to sleep and cause dial tone not to be played.

Uh ... he knows that.

If your windows PC is displaying a screensaver and you press the letter a on the keyboard, the screensaver "switches off" but the underlying application that has focus (notepad, for example) doesn't "see" the keystroke...

This functionality is BY DESIGN...

That said, I think it should differentiate between lifting the handset and pressing a key, at least! However, it doesn't... cos it wasn't intended to. It's not a bug, it's a stupid Linksys design (kinda like the c**ppy PSTN gateway that doesn't allow you to pick which port you dial out on).

Smile Re: SPA942 + Screen Saver = No Dialtone

I think we all agree that it would be better that, upon lifting the handset, the phone would immediately give dial-tone, regardless of whether it is in screen saver mode or not.

Lifting the handset is such an unambiguous move, that it should always give dial tone.

I have asked our local country rep for Linksys to pass that feature request up the Linksys chain.
Hopefully we will get that improvement in some future version of firmware (although I won't be holding my breath!)

I still like the phones though. I liked them before they had screen saver mode, and I like them even more now that they have that.
