| I am a newbie in using ATAs and routers (used only softphones with mic and speakers), and plan to buy two SPA-3102 units in order to install one in USA (ADSL ~ 2500 kBs / 500 kBs) and another in Romania (ADSL ~ 250 kBs / 100 kBs) for the purpose explained below (and I have a few questions listed at the end of this post): A) Call my mother in Romania (will install SPA-3102 in her home) by dialing from my phone (will install SPA-3102 in my home) to her phone for free without a need for either my PC or her PC to be on. I want her regular phone to ring whenever I place a call through SPA-3102, and vice versa (my phone to ring whenever she places a call through SPA-3102). B) Call my sisters in Romania by being able to "program" my mother's SPA-3102 to allow me to get dial tone in Romania so that I can palce just a local call in Romaia (and pay price of local call in Romania). C) Allow my sisters who live in Romania to call from their PSTNs to my mother's PSTN number and to be directed through my SPA-3102 to my phone just for price of local call in Romania. D) Allow my sisters who live in Romania to call from their PSTNs to my mother's PSTN number and to be directed through my SPA-3102 to ANY PHONE IN MY LOCAL AREA in USA (including my office phone), just for price of local call in Romania + price of local call in USA. Questions: 1) Is it possible to configure both SPA-3102s here in USA by connecting them to my phone (one at the time) and testing them, and then sending one unit preconfigured to Romania for almost plug and play installation by my mother? 2) Would you please help me in setting up each SPA-3102 unit, by either posting here, or giving me links to websites listing setup parameters for each of the cases above (including dial plans)? I do have SPA-3102 User Guide but it really does not provide sufficient detail required for configuring devices to satisfy my needs (explained above). 3) If I use Skype as my VoIP provider, what are "proxy", registration and subscriber information (Display Name, User ID, Password, Auth ID) for Skype? (when I signed up with Skype I got only Username and Password but I don't know their proxy, DNS server)? I am very excited about the possibility to save money on our family calls and I would appreciate your help. Thanks! |

| Thanks a lot for letting me know. I plan to sign-up then for a few SIP providers that offer free calls in US & Canada. Is it possible to achieve all four goals that I have (A through D) with only SPA-3102s, ADSLs and Phones (PSTN numbers), without a need for additional hardware? How about a possibility to configure both SPA-3102s here in USA by connecting them to my phone (one at the time) and testing them, and then sending one unit preconfigured to Romania? Am I going to be able to keep rights as an administrator even after installation in Romania (in case I need to reconfigure dial plans etc.)? Any links to websites listing setup parameters for each of the cases above (including dial plans)? Is Voxilla Config Wizard (I downloaded it) dealing with any of the four cases (goals) that I have in mind? Last edited by sinko : December 20th, 2006 at 06:59 AM. |

| Technically, you should be able to configure both units in the USA but I would not count on the one sent to Romania - it might - but there are likely to be differences in the PSTN phone systems and in the local set up of Firewalls etc. I have a 3102 in Canada and an HT 286 in the UK and they work rather well together. However, the relatives in the UK could not get the 286 to work and I had to set it up when I visited later in the year. |

| Thanks for sharing your experience. I will know more about the challenges of configuring the unit for the local firewall in Romania after sending the unit. Any links explaining basics of configuring units for firewalls? If I am not able to translate Romanian TONEs, is SPA-3102 still going to be able to function with USA settings, just providing uncommon sounds for the Romanian region? If needed, am I going to be able to reconfigure SPA-3102 in Romania from USA by using Web Wizard? If not, I don't think that I will plan on sending the unit because my mother does not have any experience, and I thought that my only option for now is to do reconfigs remotely from USA over the web, since I will go to Romania in about 3-4 years. Based on my background in programming, I feel pretty confident that I will be able to configure the units using wealth of knowledge and help from the voxilla website, but if I cannot use web wizard (as an administrator) for the unit in Romania, I don't think it will be worth sending it. Also, it might not be worth sending it if it cannot work with USA TONE settings in Romania. |

I cannot help you with your other questions, but if you need help with PSTN tones, check out this website: 3am Systems - World PSTN Tone Database In the web form just select your country and the tone you are looking for, and it will give you the "sipura code" for it. |

| Thanks a lot for posting the website with PSTN tones for many countries. After entering country data, I got very helpful settings, but I also read the following note: "The strings shown here are just templates. You need to replace xx and yy with appropriate values, where xx is the tone level in dB and yy the number of cycles. For the special case of the Disconnect Tone, a specific format must be used, namely: f1@-30,f1@-30;yy(on/off/1+2) where f1 is the frequency, yy is a reasonably small number of cycles, and on/off is the cadence." Question: Does anyone know where to find info on the tone level and the number of cycles? Also, how do I know if I will face a "special case of the Disconnect Tone", and how to find the frequency and cadence in this case? Also, how are the administrative rights with Sipura determined; say if I buy units in USA can I keep adminstratior rights (to cinfigure in Web Wizard) even when I send them to be insatlled in Romania? Is Web Wizard config possible when unit is installed internationally? |

| you can configure admin password on SPA but in order to access it via internet later on you will need to configure remote firewall to direct traffic on external port to port 80 of SPA |
| |||
| rvtango, Thanks for the reply. I would definitely like to set the admin password on SPA which I would be able to acces over the internet later. However, I was wodnering whether you know how to configure remote firewall to direct traffic on external port to port 80 in order to access the password and SPA-3102 via internet later on? Are there any settings on SPA-3102 that I should adjust or is it just a matter of adjusting my firewall, or both? Can anyone provide a step by step instructions, or the link with instructions on how to do this? |
