Default SPA-300 FXO Polarity and Does it Matter?

My SPA-300 (on-hook) Line Voltage reading is 42 (V). Does it matter whether it is plus or minus? If so, for what SPA-300 functions does it matter? (No PABX involved.)

Thanks, Rob

RobT,

Some devices are polarity conscious, but the SPA3K does not appear to be so. I have tried mine with line both ways, and still works.

Polarity matters most when using a polarity conscious telephone (like the earliest ones) or when physically mixing lines.

The voltage should be -48vDC. You should probably reverse the wires to make this so. That will ensure that you do not suffer voice degradation when setting up a three-way call involving your PSTN Line.

Even though you do not mention it, the Line 1 side of the box should be wired out to your phones with the correct polarity, too. Many multiline Caller ID boxes and telephones will behave strangely if both/all of their input lines are not of the same polarity.
