Default SPA 1001: Poor sound quality when uploading files with PC

I am using the SPA1001 with the SMC 2404WBR router and, when I upload files with my PC and get on the phone at the same time, the person I call gets choped dialogues from me.
I have Comcast 4Mbps downstream and 384kbps upstream.

I read somewhere about QoS (quality of service) which, supposedly the router prioritizes voice traffic over any other traffic.

Is it that I have to get a router that 'specifically' states it has QoS?

I do a lot of uploading of big files, mostly sending family videos to my family back home, and other media.

Please help!!!

The best affordable solution for the home that I've found is the Linksys WRT54G loaded with third party Alchemy firmware. The QOS in that firmware is awesome! I can have 4 download streams, uploading large emails, and still hold 2- g711u VoIP calls on my 512k upload.

Thanks digiblur
That's an extra $60 that I would have to spend.

If anybody else knows of a third party firmware for my existing SMC 2404WBR, please let me know. It would be greatly appreciated.

If not, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get the WRT54G.

Alternatively, you could sell your 1001 and buy a 2100, which has QOS built in. I am using the 2100 myself. BTW, it's not obvious from the literature, but it seems to be 10 Mbps Ethernet, not 100/Fast. However, I only have 2000/96 kbps here, so it's not a real issue. The QOS seems to work for the upload portion, meaning I was able to use G.711 and sending email attachments had no effect on my calls, as far as I could tell.

Meir

Thanks Meir,
but I got a little discouraged by cayman on this post http://voxilla.com/index.php?name=PN...700&highlight=
where he says that the 2100 is not to secure for the 'outside world', that it was better if you use a router with the SPA1001 instead.

You already have a router, your SMC. Put the 2100 behind the SMC and you will have a *very* secure system, with two layers of NAT protecting your computer.

The firmware is FREE. You subscribe to the techinical support forum for 20 dollars per year, which gives you unlimited support. Each new flavour of the firmware is first released as a "Pre-Release" version, available to forum subscribers only. After many pre-releases, fixing bugs, adding features, its released as a public release. At the moment, their "Satori' firmware is available publicly, the next version, Alchemy is still under pre-release, though should become public release soon. The next one is called Talisman and is supposed to have amazing featrures, specially for VoIP. Its not out yet even in pre-release.
