Default PAP2T-NA vs SPA 2102

Folks:
I am interested to buy either a PAP2T-NA or an SPA 2102. Reading the specs I can say they are identical except the latter has routing capability. I already have a router so I will not need the built in router in the 2102. However, I was told that the best position for an ATA is to be between the modem and the router to priorities the voice packets to the ATA. The price difference between the two devices is insignificant.

Are the two devices identical except for the routing?

Is it correct that voice packets have priority over other Internet traffic if the ATA is placed between the modem and the router?

Between the PAP2T and the SPA-2102 I would go for the SPA. I get a router, QoS & it seems the SPA-2102 is preferred to the PAP2T. The PAP2T cannot do 2 concurrent G729 streams. The SPA can. Not sure if this is a consideration for you.

In addition to QoS feature, putting the ATA between the modem and the router reduces a lot of issues that could arise due to NAT.

You will need to turn on the QoS to get the priority for voice packets. You may or may not notice a difference in performance depending on the speed of your connection and the bandwidth being used by other devices on your network.

funny i got 2 pap2t's and i can run 2 g.729 lines, i wasn't able to do it at first but after the firmware upgrade i was able too. But anyhow the SPA2102-na is still the better choice whether you use the router or not. if you have a good router with voip support there shouldn't be any issues at all, i mean i do it. My spa2102 runs behind a d-link dir-625 router which is made to handle voip properly and the fact that d-link uses the best QOS for voip makes it a champ. but i also used a linksys wrt54gs v2.0 and never had issues so draw your own conclusion.

I know you can set G729 as the preferred codec on both the lines, but the PAP2 will revert to a codec other than G729 for one of the lines if both are in use. At least that is how it used to be.

Is there any way you know which codec is being used when actually making calls on both lines?

There's another plus point for the SPA2101: it does T.38 so if you have a FAX connected to one of your lines T.38 is a feature you'll want to have.
