Default Linksys SPA8000-G1 as a backup interface

Linksys SPA942 Linksys SPA942
Stylish and sturdy 2- or 4-line business IP phone with 2 RJ-45s and Power Over Ethernet.
Price: $149.95
I am looking to connect this to my Inter-Tel PBX as a backup to my PRI. I used to have a Backup Voice T1 that connected to a channel bank, which then connected to my PBX with a RJ21 50 pin Cable. Since that cable is still there i'd like to get this SPA8000, hook it to my Rj21 50Pin and add SIP trunks from a VOIP provider.

Then it should function just as my old backup lines did, just at a mere fraction of that cost. (I couldn't justify paying $250 a month for lines i never used).

My question is does anyone know how many trunks I can add to this? 4, 8 16? And where is the best place to get this, should i look to get it from a provider or buy it "unlocked" then find a provider?
If i go that route (which i would prefer incase i need to change providers i dont' have to buy new equipment) any idea of a list of providers taht support this, or would any VOIP provider support it?

Sorry for the long post, i apprecaite any help.

Thanks,
Andy

The SPA8000 supports up to 8 trunks.

I don't know of any providers that are shipping the SPA8000 with their service offering, you are problably going to have to buy the SPA8000.

Most VoIP providers only support one active channel at a time, you will need to find a business offering that would support up to eight active channels.

Lacking an admin guide (sigh, old story), without having the device it's hard to judge what it can do.

How many SIP accounts does the device support anyway and is it possible to connect multiple ports to the same account or has each one its own account?

There's one thing to consider though.. you'll dial out with a completely different caller ID and you will no longer be reachable under you regular numbers if your PRI goes out (I figure you'd get the backup link from the same provider and in a configuration where they'd automatically route all incoming calls to the backup link when your main line is down).

  • The configuration of every device involved
  • SIP protocol traces
And don't forget: there's no such thing as giving too much information when describing a problem.
