Default 841 hiss when talking

I have two 841's and I like them accept there is a low level hiss on the line when I am talking. People on the other end have mentioned that when I am not talking the line is perfectly silent, but as soon as I start talking they can hear a hiss.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution?

I have tried turning down the handset gain but that doesn't work. I have not tried different codec's, but I do not think that is a good solution for me, I am a BV customer and all incoming calls are G711

-Mick

Is this with the newest firmware?

These have the newest firmware (3.1.1.a). The hiss sounds like the hiss that you hear when you are playing a cassette tape (remember those?) and turn off dolby.

Default RE: 841 hiss when talking

There are a number of postings out there talking about VoIP devices having comfort noise generators (CNG) to emulate the hiss on POTS lines. The white paper (Implementing Residential Voice over Broadband Services with the Sipura Phone Adapter) on Sipura's web site mentions CNG as does the documentation on the 841's. Unfortunately, I can not find any details or settings associated with the CNG on the Sipura 841.

Does PhoneBoy or any other VoIP wizzard out there know how to turn this "feature" off (or turn it down)?

Sounds like a good feature request for Sipura.

I finally tracked the source of the hiss down and fixed it on my phones. It was not a codec/CNG issue, it was a hardware problem. If anyone is having the same problem they may want to take a look at the following link:

http://www.miselconsulting.com/?page=841

Specifically, look at the wires between the handset connector and the PC board (shown in the third picture).

The hiss has been back for a while and we have been having some droped calls. Too bad Broadvoice support does not return my emails, will proably drop the service.

Pardon my confusion, but how does either a hiss on your SPA-841 or a problem with a self-provisioned non-supported client device become BroadVoice Customer Service's problem?

A prerequisite of getting definitive isloation of your dropped calls problem will be for you to revert to the device you registered with and to set this device to be provisioned by BroadVoice. Only then will BV be able to take responsibility for solving the problem, whether it is in your client device, BroadVoice's equipment, or somewhere in between.

You knew these rules of engagement when you decided to BYOD and self-provision, instead of ordering black box service from Brand V.

Default RE: 841 hiss when talking

I was able to get some help from Sipura, they suggested I use one of my 841's to call the other using IP dialing. When I tried this the hiss was not present, this suggests suggest the hiss is not a Sipura problem.

I had (mistakenly) thought that I had solved the problem because I had previously changed the wires between the handset connector and the PC board to a twisted pair (BTW this was not recommended by Sipura, I was just trying to solve the problem). Unfortunately the hiss is still there (unless dial another SIP device using IP dialing).

If BV does not want to respond to my email on this issue, that is just fine, the real killer is the increasing number of calls that get dropped/disconnected part way through the conversation. I have tried to use BV provisioning on this device but in my profile they point me toward a proxy sever that does not seem to exist (the address has a - in a place where there should be a .)

The proxy servers with hyphens require that you use specific BV DNS servers instead of whatever your normal DNS service is.
