Default HT488 Allows Unauthorized Phone Use?

Quote from the manual.

"PSTN-to-VoIP Calls.

To make a PSTN-to-VoIP call, PSTN callers need to originate a call to the FXO port telephone number first. If no one answers the FXS phone after 4 (default value, can be configured) ring tones, a dial tone is played. At this time, users can dial a VoIP telephone number then # (or wait for 4 seconds). The call will be established afterwards. If no VoIP number is entered after the dial tone, HandyTone-488 will hang up automatically in 10 seconds.
In the web configuration page, if the Route to VoIp field is configured, the
second stage dialing is eliminated. That is, after users dial the FXO port
telephone number, the VoIP number will be called automatically."

Wait, no user/password request? So anybody can call my phone and if I am not home, then they can call all over the world using my voip account? To my understanding, you are forced to set up call forward function, otherwise it is pretty unsecure feature. Or am I reading something incorrectly? :?:

(I don't have the device yet, but I am planning to buy this or some similar device. I want to understand the features before purchase.)

I peeked through the screens on an HT488 and it appears we have the same understanding. It's worth an email to Grandstream to see what they have to say.

They told me they are addressing the problem in updated firmware, scheduled to be available for beta within the next two weeks.

I've got the same response from Grandstream:

8/15/2005: Password protection is supported in our new firmware which is under QA testing now.

I can not still find this new firmware? I can not believe that they left this feature without any authentication.

Default RE: HT488 Allows Unauthorized Phone Use?

I have a strange problem with my HT488... after upgrade to 1.0.2.16, in STATUS menu I still have "Program-- 1.0.1.2 Bootloader-- 10.0.0.22 HTML-- 1.0.0.18 VOC-- 1.0.0.10 "
I have problems updating FXO settings, I submit new values but after reboot and relogin FXO page is empty again. Alsi I have noticed that on BASIC settings I can not change "Number of Rings: " and it always answers after 4 rings plays dial tone even if I set the password?!

Is it possible that TFTP upgrade (from Grandstream server) was not succesfull or that it was just partially upgraded?!

I do have the same issue with the "Number of Rings" resetting to 4. All the values wich are not in a valid range are refused and the value is set to default (4 rings). I don't know the upper range but you can't set a number of Rings lower than 1.

I also had a problem when I tried to modify the setting using FireFox with an http proxy: => The modification were applied but on my browser it kept showing me the old values. Emptying the cache helped me.
