Default Grandstream HandyTone 496 and two SIP accounts

Hi,

hope someone can help on this.

I bought a Grandstream HT 496 form my voip/adsl provider.
Now I'm trying to configure it to use two different sip accounts, one with them and one with another provider. But this doesn't work.

My provider says the device is not locked but they believe that the ATA adaptor works with two SIP accounts from ONE provider, not two different ones.

Is this the case?

If not, how do I make it work with two different providers (which is the reason why I bought this particular model...)?

Many thanks to all,
Manny

Have you read the User Manual yet? You can find it here. The information you need starts at the bottom of page 19. It shows that each Line has a setting for an individual SIP server, which means that the two Lines do not need to be from the same provider if you have a truly unlocked device.

Hi and thanks,

yes, I have read the manual and thought the device would support two sip accounts, not necessarily from the same provider.

If it is as you say then my provider is lying and I'm kind of stuffed, because they'll never admit they are! Poor things, they (call center people) might simply have no clue they are selling blocked devides...

Anyways, do you know if both connected phones can use either one SIP account or phone connected to fsx 1 can only use the account set up for that port and phone connectd to fxs 2 can only use the account set up for that port?h

My impression was that both phones can use both accounts...

I will get back to my provider to see whether the device is blocked or not.

many thanks,
best regards
manny

I would expect that the two Lines are completely independent of each other and just happen to share a power supply and management screen.

Now, if your Line 1 service provider locks your device in order to protect their Line 1 credentials and settings that could very well lock you out of the ability to put your desired settings into Line 2.

Mystery solved.

Grandstream confirmed to me that the adaptor has two independent ports that can work with two different providers.

The only thing is that the phone plugged into the Phone1 exit will use the settings of FXS1 and the phone plugged into the Phone2 exit will use the settings of FXS2.

The reason why mine wasn't working was simply that my adaptor had this inverted!! So that Phone1 was using FXS2 and Phone2 was using FXS1.

Therefore all my tests failed!!

Thanks mberlant for your help.

Hope this info is useful to other users with a similar problem.
