Default VOIP quality at 128kbps

I'm currently facing a lot of problems with our customers who have 128kbps internet bandwidth who have been provided with our VoIP services. The voice quality on this bandwidth is very bad or not good at all and I have made a suggestion to my bosses that we only allow our VoIP services to our internet customers with a bandwidth of 256kbps and upwards.

Is there anybody out there whose got an idea how VoIP at 128kbps can be improved. Skype and others available on the net are okay at that speed but our services at that speed is just unrealistic.

Thanks.

have them go to dslreports.com have them check check there line speed up and down. see what they have. also have them use tweak system.

also can have router bad at isp.

also what is bandwidth is required from your company. I have seen VoIP work fine at 14kbps.

also modem can be bad.

hope it helps..

128kbps is more than enough bandwidth to accommodate the highest bandwidth codecs, G711u and G711a, which are both 64kbps codecs. The G729a codec uses only 8kbps bandwidth and sounds almost as good as the G711 codecs. You will probably notice some improvement by switching to the G729a codec, but even that can be overrun by other services being used at the same time unless QOS is used.

The key to using VoIP on a bandwidth limited channel along with other Internet services is to have QOS at the point of bandwidth limiting, and the RTP packets must be given priority over other services. Some ATAs such as the Linksys SPA2102 have a QOS feature but it works only on packets going upstream.
