Default RE: VOIP Answering machine

Most service providers offer voice mail as part of their basic package. Many have full voice mail systems where you can dial in to pick up messages. Many have voice-to-email systems, where messages are taken by the system and then sent to you via email as a .wav attachment.

If you're looking for something in the home the answer depends upon what your needs and capabilities are. If you are using a hardware adapter (like a Cisco186), you just have to plug an ordinary answering machine into the same Line 1 jack as your ordinary phone. If you need something more sophisticated you will probably need to graduate to something like an Asterisk VoIP PABX, which runs on a Linux box in your home.

I use Asterisk as my answering machine for one of my PSTN lines.
