Virtually any USB headset or handset will give you better sound quality than plugging into your sound card.

Hi FreeFlyer,

I use two different sets at the moment:

Plantronics DSP-500 (USB)
Plantronics .Audio 90 (analog)

Both were designed more for PC gaming than VOIP calls, but they work exceptionally well for me. These sets have both left and right speakers (i.e. they cover both of your ears), whereas typically phone headsets only cover a single ear - which callers may prefer.

The DSP-500 was purchased for $56 from Amazon a month or two ago. The .Audio 90 was just purchased from Circuit City for $20. I can hear the difference between the two (the DSP being better), but, for the price, the .Audio 90 is excellent - the microphone is just a little weak (which can be overcome by tweaking the settings).

I like the headset we sell at the Voxilla store, which I believe is made by Plantronics.
