| I already have a voice modem card and a PSTN handset connected to my phone wiring and my computer - a left-over from the dial-up days. I'd like to be able to pick up my PSTN handset and talk directly to my PC in a standards-based way - using VoiceXML preferably. Then I could distribute apps to the many people I know who also have the same equipment, without them having to buy ATAs etc. I can't find anything in the specs that address this direct-connect scenario. Which bit of VoiceXML shows how to configure an ordinary voice modem as DTMF and voice input? I just don't see why any Cisco products are needed - the modem card and it's O/S interface to open source software provides everything needed for VOIP, doesn't it? I downloaded a utility that is an answerphone that records telephone conversations. It uses a voice modem and your existing PSTN phone. You dial your caller and it records to the hard disk as you both talk. It detects when either party hangs up. I tried it with a standard full duplex $10 modem card and my regular RJ11 handset. The install docs for the voice-recording software said that the PSTN handset should be plugged into the wall jack socket, not the modem card, so I presume this is a limiting factor. It works fine, but it does it in a closed source way. I imagine that the author could add SIP and attract a lot of people. I'd like to leverage VoiceXML using just the stuff people have already got, so that my users don't have to buy any hardware - I assume most have still got voice modems and regular phones. How do I use my phone to converse with my computer? TIA Chris |
