Default Disconnect Tone - Which Provider?

I don't quite understand something. I was advised to enter a certain Disconnect Tone value into my ATA (a specific value required by my POTS provider) - which I've done. And the device works fine. But shouldn't there be an additional Disconnect Tone value entered into the configuration, one used by the VOIP provider? I have the Sipura 3102, for instance. I can make either VOIP or POTS calls with it. If I disconnect the device from the POTS system, and ONLY use it for VOIP calls, where does the POTS Disconnect Tone value come into play? Don't I need to enter a VOIP Disconnect Tone value somewhere, as well? Maybe someone can explain why the one value is sufficient, if it is.

It doesn't. Digital telephony doesn't need it, it has separate signalling that tells a device when a call has ended. In case of SIP, if somebody calls you via VoIP and then ends the call, your device gets a SIP BYE message from your IPTSP, at which point the device knows the call has ended and your SPA will play the Reorder Tone configured on your SPA (in the regional settings tab).

So if one travels from country to country, for instance, all you need to know is the Disconnect Tone required by the POTS provider of whichever country you're in. And there is a default setting in the ATA's configuration for the SIP BYE message (for VOIP calls only) which never needs changing. Is that correct?

Assuming you are connecting the FXO port, then yes (although, it's not a must.. there are other means to detect a disconnect... CPC, Polarity Reversal, and of course the silence detection.. disconnect tone, if properly chosen, will always work, CPC and polarity reversal aren't supported in some countries, and silence detection will always work, but it's your worst case solution since it the line will stay in use longer).

No.. there's no setting whatsoever. Analog = tones, Digital = separate messages outside the audio stream. Your IPTSP will tell your device: End the call, Now!, and your device will do that. And that message is completely independent of your actual location.. you could be on the phone using a nasa linkup and it would still be the same. That's the beauty of a having a signalling channel and a signalling standard (SIP.. in Europe we also use ISDN quite often, another digital protocol with a separate signalling channel). There is a disconnect tone that your SPA3k will play if there's a call and the remote party hangs up. You can put anything you like in there, it doesn't matter because the only person to ever get to hear that tone is you (well.. if hop-on hop-off is used to allow people to make VoIP to PSTN calls, then that's not quite currect but that's for another day.. after all we're talking the probably most complex device discussed on this board - after a full blown Asterisk of course)
