Default I'm in China: how to route voip traffic via Hong Kong?

Hi,

I live in China and I have an account with an Italian Voip provider (Messagenet).
Here in Shanghai we face high latency problems and high packets loss. Using Voip is a nightmare cause the broadband to USA is not enough for a country like this.

Anyway, the speed from China to Hong Kong is high and the ADSL performance is good. The Hong Kong to USA performance is also very good and very low latency.

Question is: how do I route the Voip SIP call via Hong Kong? Which kind of hardware or software do I have to setup in Hong Kong (I have an office with ADSL there that can host my devices)? I saw on the internet Sip Express router, but I don't know if it answers to my needs.

Has someone any idea about how to make my Voip calls working?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Roberto

I think you would be much better off to set up an Asterisk VoIP PABX in Hong Kong instead of a Sip Express Router. You will have a bit of learning to do - more, if you aren't a little familiar with Linux - but it will serve you very well.

Basically, you would set up your Asterisk to register with Messagenet (and also a US provider, if you desire) and to accept registration as an extension from your ATA in Shanghai. In fact, your basic requirements are so simple that Asterisk@Home might suit you well to get you "in the Asterisk business" quickly.

I have an Asterisk running here in Japan, with client "extensions" in Japan and one in the US. As part of my installation testing my colleague in the US made test calls through my Asterisk via my US service providers to US telephone numbers. Although latency totalled a little over 400ms, calls were clear and quality varied from "good cellular" to "sounds like next door".

Please have a look through the Asterisk forum here. There's an incredible amount of information available, and some of it is even useful.

Good luck to you.

Michael

Another way would be to setup a VPN to your office in Hong Kong and route your VoIP traffic over that.

Unfortunately this solution would introduce latency, which is what we are trying to minimize. I would have to say that mberlant
