Can you explain how FWD works?

I've been using FWD now for several months, and wanted to get an idea of the process used in connecting two members by voice. I'm using xLite, and I know that when I start the program, I am registered with an FWD server. What happens when I dial a number, or when someone dials me, how do the calls connect?

For a detailed explaination on how FWD works, you just have to do a google on "SIP" and take a look at either the SIP RFC, or some of the powerpoint presentations that explain the details. A great starting point is Henning's website at: http://www.cs.columbia.edu/sip/
