Default how can I dial pstn number via sip

Hi Guys,

I have two Grandstream GXP 2000 sip phones configured and works fine.
one is in india and the other is in UK. Everything works great as expected.

now i'm looking for solution where I can call using sip phone from UK to india and I want something in india which receives sip phone and allows
me to use indian PSTN network so that I can call my relatives. Do I need
some sort of VOIP (VoIP) gateway or something in india...?

Im a noobie in this area and want to do this to avoid calling cost. Any advise related to what hardware I should purchase, etc. would be most appreciated.

Thanks a bunch in advance guys.

Cheers

One way to do it is with a Linksys SPA3102. That would be your adapter in India which is designed to bridge a voip call with a pstn (landline) call. You attach a pstn line to the adapter and an incoming call can get a dial tone to dial out.

To call the SPA3102 you just need any sip phone or softphone. You could configure the Grandsteam to do it. You can use any voip provider that allow you to configure your own device. It is also possible to call using direct ip dialing. The easiest thing to do would be to select a voip provider that allows free calls between accounts on the same network.

The SPA3102 is widely used in the manner you outline. The adapter is very flexible and as a consequence many find the initial configuration frustrating to get correct.

hi buddy(hwittenb),

Thanks for your prompt reply. When you say "an incoming call can get a dial tone to dial out" do you mean that incoming sip phone...?

At present I have two grandstream 2000 units, one in UK and one in india
which I'm very very happy with. Would this SPA3102 work with sipgate.co.uk

I have a question to set this up. In india grandstream 2000 is connected
to my adsl router. where would I need to connect SPA3102. I'd appreciate if you could draw a rough diagram or point me to any website link to get my head round. As being a software engineer i dont have a great knowledge in this area but i'm a good learner and will really appreciate your help.

Kind Regards

You wouldn't need the grandstream, although the Grandstream GXP2000 is a nice 4-line ip phone. Since you already have it I would consider retaining it for voice conversation with the distant party.

You could plug the SPA3102 into the same distant router and just use it to access the pstn line. Put a different voip account on the SPA3102 and just use it for bridging a call to the distant pstn network. Call it with one of the other lines on your local Grandstream GXP2000 or set it up with just a different account from the same provider and call it with the same line. If you have a pstn line at your current location you could get it working locally first.

Hi hwittenb,

Thanks for clearing this up for me. I've ordered SPA3102 just now which says it is unlocked. so I'll set it up in UK first and then once its all working
i'll send it to india.

Is it easy to set SPA3102 to get it working with sipgate.co.uk ..? would appreciate if you could point me in right direction where I can get documentation or help on configuration of SPA 3102.

I''m really greatful for your help and time. Much appreciated bro. I have just left you a good reputation through forum.

Kind Regards

Yes it is easy to setup. You just put in the proxy, userid and password for the account.

You would be using it a different way, just to access the pstn line without ringing a phone attached to the SPA3102. There are a couple of different ways to do that but they aren't the standard configuration. Put up a thread in the Linksys/Sipura group on this forum when you get the SPA3102.

They don't send you any documentation that amounts to much along with the SPA3012, nor do they make it easy to find any. Grab the ATA Admin Manual that you hopefully can find a link for on this page. The manual applies to a range of products.

The problem that you can have is the router that you attach ata. No doubt the one in the UK is a different brand from the one at the distant location. Different brands can work differently and can cause different problems. The problems can be overcome, but they are sometimes frustrating.
