What happened to personalized avatars?

The other day I took the time to upload my avatar to this site - now today I made a post and noticed it did not appear. I went back to check and now I see that apparently you are only letting people use preset avatars built into the system??? Why the loss of functionality? I think the ability to upload one's own avatar helps personalize the posts, as well as providing easy identification of frequent users of the site.

The loss of functionality was entirely unintentional, caused when upgrading the forum software. Unfortunately, it means you have to upload your avatar again as the folder where the avatars were stored was emptied (by mistake) when upgrading.

I am sorry for the inconvenience. It won't happen again.

You can now upload your own avatar in your Forum Profiles again.

Why not make it so that I can link to a graphic that's on another server and use that as my avatar? A lot of sites let you do that.
