Exclamation SPA to softphone

I know it is possible to setup two SPA's in an ip network.
SPA > internet < SPA

1. Is it possible to set it up using a softphone on the other end?
SPA3102 > internet < Softphone

2. What softphone software would you recommend?

3. How do I configure the softphone since SPA3102 will handle the PSTN connection on the other end of the internet connection.

Any ideas will be welcome. I would appreciate it very much. Thank you.

The two principal free softphones are Counter Path's XLite and SJLabs' SJPhone. I'm sure you can do this with XLite, however here is what you do with SJPhone. Hopefully I didn't miss too many steps.

It's best to have a symbolic address setup for your distant phone. If you don't have one, read this wiki on direct ip dialing:
voip

Whether you have a symbolic or numeric address for the remote ata you also need the port number. The port number can be anything that you setup on the adapter's configuration page. If wish to call the phone attached to Line 1 you use the port number on the Line 1 tab. If you are going to use the voip-to-pstn gateway you use the port number on the PSTN tab.

To Call the Phone Attached to Line 1
To Call the voip-to-pstn gateway using pin authentication

With SJPhone you click on the little center wrench and hammer icon, then on the page that comes up click on Profiles. On the Profiles page click on New. Give a name to the profile. Click on Sip Proxy. In the proxy domain field put the remote ata ip address (symbolic or numeric) and put the port number in the port field to the right. Under User domain put the same ip address. Uncheck Register with proxy.

I would also use a STUN server to aid in NAT transversal of your router and firewall. Click on STUN, enter stun.softjoys.com in the Server Address field and 3478 in the port field to the right. Actually you can use any stun server.

Click OK and then a little box will come up for the user id and password. For
Account Number: user_id (Under Subscriber Information on the Line 1 or PSTN tab)
Password: password (actually this is not used)

Next you need to add your remote phone in the SJPhone address book. On the main SJPhone page click on Add in the center of the page. On the Respondant page that comes up give your remote phone a name. Next check Edit dialstring and in the Dialstring field type sip:your_user_name@ip_address where your_username is the user id entered in the configuration page of your remote ata.

Reconfirm that you are using the “Profile” that you just setup. You should see the profile name at the top of SJPhone.

Now you are ready to call your remote ata. Double click on the icon that corresponds to the address book entry that you just made or Double click on the green phone and then double click on the icon for your number.

If you are calling the pstn line using pin authentication you will hear the beeps to enter your pin number. You will need to bring up the SJPhone keyboard to do this. You will then hear the dial tone returned by the distant SPA. Now you need to enter the pstn number that you wish to dial thru the SJPhone keypad.

To Make a Call Thru the voip-to-pstn gateway to the pstn using "http digest authentication"

This is the port number on the PSTN tab.

Click OK and when the box comes up Please enter this information to initialize the service provile enter
Account: your_user_id (HTTP Authentication VoIP User 1 Auth ID)
Password: your password (HTTP Authentication Voip User 1 Password)

Next you need to add the remote PSTN phone numbers you wish to dial. On the main SJPhone page click on Add in the center of the page. On the Respondant page that comes up give your remote phone a name. In the phone number field put the remote phone number as you wish to dial it on the pstn phone line.

Reconfirm that you are using the “Profile” that you just setup. You should see the profile name at the top of SJPhone.

Now you are ready to make a call to a remote pstn phone number. Double click on the phone icon for the number you wish to dial, or double click on the green phone icon and then double click on the icon for the pstn number you wish to dial. Your pstn number will dial automatically by the remote SPA.
