Default Calling into Linksys SPA-3102 from cell to make long distance calls with no PSTN line

I’ve been reading threads in this forum for a couple of weeks now and I’m still not sure if the following is possible… but here’s what I would like to do:

I have a Linksys SPA-3102 box and I have a VOIP service provider that I have successfully had working on Line1 for a while now. I don’t have any other kind of telephone service or provider. i.e. I only have one telephone number and no land line.

What I would like to do is call my telephone number from say work or my cell phone, enter some kind of security password and then be able to make long distance telephone call using my VOIP service provider.

I also want to have a normal telephone at home connected to the box.

When I purchased the SPA-3102 I thought this was possible but all the posting I’ve read seem to indicate that I need to call into the box using a land line (plugged into the unit???) via the PTSN Line.

I would be grateful if someone would a least let me know if what I’m trying to do is possible… and if anyone has some time some hints would be most appreciated.

Many thanks,

mcc

You are talking about voip to voip calling. It is possible to do it, however you might find it difficult to setup. It requires strapping (jumpering) the FXO (line) port with the FXS (phone) port with an RJ11 cable. In addition, if you want to use a handset to talk on an incoming call from the line 1 provider you will need to put a splitter in the circuit to attach the handset.

To do this type of calling you are going to have to have another different provider to handle either the incoming or outgoing call. You need to have one provider on the line 1 tab and another provider on the pstn tab. Depending on whether the incoming call comes on the line 1 tab or the pstn tab you will be using the pstn-to-voip or voip-to-pstn gateway.

I did some tests tonight and I would say that you need to allocate a significant amount of time to get it working.

The easiest way is to have your FXO be connected to a normal landline or another cellular phone through one of the GSM terminal like Nokia (Nokia 32 Premicell - The Nokia 32 is a Fixed Cellular Terminal GSM Gateway). This will require you to have an additiona cellular phone. I don't know in which country you are living. Some countries allow dual GSM SIMs on the same cellular number with an extra fee. So you can use your same GSM line to access your SPA 3102. I believe the two SIMs cannot communicate with one another.
