| When i'm not downloading any torrents the service works great but when i download torrents people can't hear on either end. I have Linksys WRT54g V5 and my structure of the network is as follows: DSL modem---->Linksys router----->Mediatrix voip adapter. Please and thanks in advance. |

| P2P and VOIP are not exactly friends due to the fact that voip requires steady bandwidth both ways with little jitter. Unfortunately P2P sometimes clogs your bandwidth, especially upload that is slower than download and in particular P2P increases jitter significantly. You might remedy the situation on your side 2 ways - firstly you might restrict the speed of both dowload and upload your torrent client is using. (Azzureus I'm using allows this in config). I would first get a good idea what your real download and upload speeds are and then restrict torrent speeds so that you give voip enough bandwidth both ways. How much, depends on codec used, but for ulaw leave at least 100-120k. More significantly, a router with QoS turned on will prioritize voip packets over others. Given you have v5 of wrt router your choices are a bit limited, yet it is still possible to load openwrt or dd-wrt firmware into it and run QoS. You need to read relevant web pages. Alternatively, you might get a new router that would support QoS out of the box. |

| Thx alot for your reply, i really appreciate it. I was going through my router settings and it does have QOS option built into it, will that work??? The router has the lastest firmware from Linksys which is 1.01.XX. Thx again. Quote:

| Look at Quality of Service - WRT Wiki where detailed instrutions are available. In your case, you have several choices to achieve QoS. If your voip adapted has static IP you can give it priority using "Prioritizing by IP" or alternatively use "Prioritizing by MAC" (the MAC of adapted can be usually found at the bottom of it). This way, traffic from you voip should be always given the top priority over all other applications. |
