I just set up SJlabs Pocket pc phone and it works! Now I need to know what is the best proxy to use when in europe for calls to the midwest. Does anyone know the answer?

There is already a lot of discussion here about choosing the best/most appropriate BV proxy. Why don't you read through those postings? I guarantee you will find what you are looking for.

You assume that I have not read these discussions and you are wrong. While they did help educate me about proxy issues they did not have a general discusssion of europe outbound, other than the discussions of the non-functional london server. There was no general discussion of which server is currently used and why. So in essence I did not find what I was looking for.

You're bound to find that the East Coast proxies have lower latency and less hops than the West Coast proxies. I am currently in London and am using the DCA proxy due to the lowest ping times, which are about 85 ms. BOS is a bit higher at 95 ms. I tried just about all of them for fun and picked the lowest. I see from the threads that some are more stable than others, but I can only personally say that DCA has been very good for me.

I used this method after see the following link on the BroadVoice site: http://www.broadvoice.com/support_in...byod_xten.html.

The proxies, as far as I can tell, are:

proxy.bos.broadvoice.com
proxy.chi.broadvoice.com
proxy.dca.broadvoice.com
proxy.lax.broadvoice.com
proxy.mia.broadvoice.com

Others may exists, but these are the ones I know about. You'll note that the link I provided only mentions dca, lax, and mia.

Does this help?

Craig:

That is exactly what I was looking for. I am in Ohio and also use the dca despite being physically closer to chi. My pings to chi are twice the dca numbers. It seems like this will be the best choice when traveling in Europe. Thanks.

You won't know until you get to Europe what the situation in Europe is. Just as your environment in Ohio is not what you would have expected, don't be surprised if LAX, for example, ends up "closer" than BOS.

I appreciate your comments. The problem I have is that the PocketPC does not have a c: promt and therefore I can't do a ping once that I am there. Or maybe I have just overlooked a way to do it in my user manual. There are guarentees especially since I will do most of my calling from Italy and not the UK.

My recommendation is that you start out using the Proxy Server that you use at home (dca), and only switch to one of the others if voice quality is unacceptable. I expect that you will have no problems regardless of which Proxy you use at any given time.

All seven of my connections here are North of 200ms ping times, and all generally sound from "better than cellular" to "right next door".

In my searches last night I found a freeware program that will ping on the PPC. I also found a nifty $20 program called pocketwinc by cirond.com that will quicky and easily identify open wifi along with ping. Thanks for your comments.
