Default BroadVoice Ranked Best Internet Phone Service by Wired

I just noticed this link on the front page of the BroadVoice site: http://www.broadvoice.com/press/wired-2005-10-25.html

I found this statement to be interesting:

"Expansion plans are in the immediate future for BroadVoice as the number of customers has increased this year by 180% and the company’s Web site has attracted 233% more visitors this year as well. To keep up with the steady customer demand, BroadVoice also recently moved into larger offices and continues to hire more staffers. "

Comments?

Default Not ALL bad

Well, maybe not the right place to post this but here goes.... BV actually did right by me... There I said it. As much as it might hurt and with the likelyhood I will get flamed... I said it I had signed up a month ago under a BYOD $5.95 acct... waiting for an area code in my area. Their availablity page clearly states you can/should do that and when the a local number comes available you can change for free. Well, they charged me and it took 3 emails and then they credited me back the charge... It should not have taken 3 emails and I should not have had to send them the link to the offer. But, maybe they are growing TOO fast... but wouldn't we all like to own/run a business with that problem  All of my calls (not a lot but avg 30mins each) have been of better quality than my cell phone... (yea, I know - crappy cell service!)

.... and as for as --does unlimited mean unlimited-- ... Well, it wasn't so long we had this argument about ISPs offering unlimited internet access (dial-up) --- but that didn't mean you could run a server and stay dialed up all month.... or should it?? BTW - who won that debate / lawsuit 8) I think I will stick with BV and when I am not happy with them I will move on....

your analogy is not accurate.
bv targeted users using their service from abroad calling their own country "abroad".
It is misleading advertising and even when these users called with proof that the use was not for business they were ignored and still back charged.
Furthermore they increased their regulatory recovery fee without informing their users. Potentially and theoretically they can make this fee anything they want even $1000/month and according to their onesided changeable and clickthrough TOS agreement everyone using their service would be liable.
No other company does this.
A little honesty in their business practices is all anyone wants. Don't tell people they can call countries like Brazil unlimited and when someone actually does this then they reclassify them without even a warning like "hey dude you're usage has been flagged as a business send us some proof or we will have to change your plan."

does anybody have a link to actual Wired article? Apparently, it is in Wired Test magazine, which is different from Wired, and which is not online (or at least I couldn't find it). I am very curious to read the VoIP review, not the PR from BV...

Wow - 100th post! I am definitely getting hooked. Help meeee!

Default More....

The analogy is not accurate :? ... as I recall, both are about defining unlimited and what everyone was going to do to MAKE them behave. ... and the discussion groups were just as heated ... The market place has already decided the first case and it will also decide the fate of VSPs ... If a VSP over charges me ... I will dispute the charges. (shopsafe so the amount they can collect is limited  ), ....if I do not receive customer service to my satisfaction I will do my part as a member of the market place and take my business elsewhere... Let the market work

I might change this post next week

After nine months with Broadvoice, I finally gave them up because of their intolerably poor voice quality. I signed up voip service with italkbb.com for $25 a month for unlimited calls, and the voice quality to China is superb. Plus they gave me an all-Mainland China phone number in addition a U.S. local number. There is no extra charge for a Supura 1001. Now I have my Supura 3000 for sale. Anyone interested, please let me know.

I frequently read such reports of poor BV call quality, and am bewildered. Except for a few weeks after the infamous Global Crossing divorce, my call quality has ALWAYS been outstanding...completely indistinguishable from POTS.

Mind you, I make only domestic USA calls on my BV line. Is the poor call quality you've experienced only on international calls?

I'm also puzzled by reliability complaints, as I've been with them for eleven months now, and have had no outages outside of the GlobalX incident.

(I'm a self-provisioned BYOD customer, which may be a factor in both cases.)

It seems they don't support BYOD, or give out login info. I was hoping I could configure my home asterisk to talk to it. Can you check to see if it is possible?

Default BV voice quality

As much as I am irritated with BroadVoice, I agree with BlindLemonLars - the voice quality is consistently good ("almost PSTN"). If any of my callers complain about the sound quality (or if I am calling home and can't hear anything) - it envitably means that my son is hogging the network by uploading or running a game server... Then again, maybe we just have special QoS in Encino/Tarzana area...

But I am still looking for Wired review...

Until someone comes up with an independent source, I do not believe this review. The movie industry just got busted by making up a reviewer that did not exist, and having him be quoted as sayinig "This should be movie of the year" or some other such garbage.
