Default Is Broadvoice an option for me?

I have decided to sign in with a voip provider since I make a lot of phone-calls, locally (Greece) and International (UK).

From the BV's support page, I found a list of 3 proxy servers. The ping replies were relatively dissapointing.

Pinging proxy.dca.broadvoice.com [147.135.0.128] with 32 bytes of data:
Ping statistics for 147.135.0.128:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 180ms, Maximum = 184ms, Average = 182ms

Pinging proxy.lax.broadvoice.com [147.135.8.128] with 32 bytes of data:
Ping statistics for 147.135.8.128:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 225ms, Maximum = 228ms, Average = 226ms

Pinging proxy.mia.broadvoice.com [147.135.4.128] with 32 bytes of data:
Ping statistics for 147.135.4.128:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 187ms, Maximum = 191ms, Average = 189ms

I would like your opinion on
a) whether it would be worthwhile to sign-in with BV, taking into consideration the above results.
b) are there any other proxy servers. I would be very interested for a proxy server in Europe

It should be ok, I was using BV from Sweden, Estonia, and Denmark no problem... however, I understand your concern. BV supposedly has a European proxy in the works but they have been saying that for quite some time now and nothing has happened. Anyways, I can recommend them but I personally signup with a BYOD plan and use you own equipment to save on postage if you decide to cancel (I am a BYOD customer and am very happy with BV).

Slice

P.S. You can call BV support via SIP URI free and ask them about the status of the European proxy.

Also try pinging proxy.nyc.broadvoice.com.

Try pinging all the proxies again at different times, like after 10pm Eastern (US) Time.

I've had results on LAX in the 60ms range, but, for example, right now, I just got:

Reply from 147.135.8.128: bytes=32 time=154ms TTL=242
Reply from 147.135.8.128: bytes=32 time=94ms TTL=242
Reply from 147.135.8.128: bytes=32 time=96ms TTL=242

It could still be an option for you. You will probably experience more delay though.

From everything that I've read here, there were supposed to be proxies coming on line in Europe, but they have not materialized.

Default RE: Re: Is Broadvoice an option for me?

I live in Switzerland. I have had BV since Dec 2004, and I used the DCA and NYC servers and experienced poor call quality and lots of dropped calls. BV may work for you, but for me, it was just too uncertain. Europe to Europe calls were especially awful. Europe to USA was all right, but very spotty, I rarely had a call that didn't have at least some disruption on one side or the other.

London proxy was promised back in December 2004 when I signed up, but I never saw it realised.

Cheers

mberlant is an unknown quantity at this point

Ping time is not a reliable indicator of call quality. I connect to BroadVoice (and everyone else) from Japan. None of my ping times is less than 200ms, but all enjoy generally very good call quality.

I alternate homing between LAX and DCA, depending on call quality and reliability, not ping time (which is consistently shortest to LAX).

You can try to estimate the performance as best as you can from others' comments, but when it comes down to it you'll have to try it out. I would buy a Sipura box from Voxilla, and then try BV out. If they don't deliver, switch to another provider for a while and see how that works. My connection times are 100ms on average to DCA and NYC and I had problems with BV, I had great service with Vonage when I had them with the same connection, and now I am using ICH with great success. I'm hoping to switch back to BV after they get the London server up.
