Default Broadvoice now g.729a instead of G.711?

As of a few days ago, when looking at the information page on my SPA-3000 I'm seeing all of my Broadvoice calls connecting with g.729a codec. I haven't changed anything on my end. Others are reporting the same thing at Broadband Reports. Can anyone confirm that Broadvoice is changing their standard codec to 729a?

If this is the case will users get to select their own codec? What codecs will be supported?

Thanks.

It looks like BV has _added_ G.729 support to their repertoire. It has not, and almost certainly will not, stop accepting G.711.

You are just seeing the result of a successful CODEC negotiation between your ATA and BV's gateway. As you say, you did not change anything in your ATA, so that means that you favor G.711, but will accept G.729, G.723 or G.726. When you make a call your ATA tells this to the other end (in this case, BV's gateway). Since a few days ago, as you observed, the BV gateway started responding, "I prefer G.729. Is that ok with you?" and your ATA accepted the counteroffer. If you were to change your preferred CODEC to G.729 (from G.711), you would shorten this negotiation by a few milliseconds

The reason that G.711 will not be dropped is because it is the baseline CODEC, without any compression, upon which virtually all other voice grade CODECs are built.

Does anyone know if Broadvoice will accept G.726(24)? I guess I could lock my ATA to this and see if I can still make calls with Broadvoice.

No, they don't support G.726-24. In fact, there was a problem a while back with the Sipura if you didn't explicitly DISABLE this codec. They do support G726-32, or they did.
