Default Audio Quality Problems

Anyone else noticing audio quality problems with BV?

Since they had their meltdown I've had several people complan that my audio has sounded like I'm under water. They sound just fine to me, so it's a one directional problem.

I've tried multple calls with different proxies with the same results. These are all calls in the California.

I run Asterisk here, so it's possible it's something odd on my end, but I can't seem to pinpoint a problem. I'm trying to figure out if it's me or them.

Default RE: Audio Quality Problems

I just spoke to my wife (she's at home on BV line, I'm at work), and it did have a echo that faded in and out a little, very similar to a cell call that is getting close to dropping, where the person's voice sounds like a robot.

I was just happy to have the call up at all.

I have also noticed a lesser call quality lately. To me, I hear the echo on my end now, where it was crystal clear before. Nothing has changed in my setup.
It seems like the person I'm talking to is much louder now, and therefore more distorted. I'm glad the phone is working now, but I'd like the call quality to return aswell.

Edit: I'm in CA also

These types of minor problem have occurred for me as well. The voice from the other party is always crystal clear however, some times I hear my own echo but the other party doesn

For the past 5-6 days, we've had sporadic audio problems: echo (constant and annoying for the length of the call) on outgoing calls and more occasional audio dropouts on incoming calls. I'm in Los Angeles, so perhaps this is a Socal issue?

Also, anyone notice while waiting on hold on 611 for the long period required that the quality of the on-hold music starts to deteriorate? It happened on several occasions.

Default Few More Diagnostic Notes

I've done some more testing and determined a few more aspects fo the problem.

First, it seems to be dependent on what number I call. If I call one of my friends he says my audio quality is consistently bad. If I call my land land and leave myself a message the audio quality is fine.

This is the most incideous sort of problem. It never shows up on my end, so I can't detect when there is a problem. Cell phones have taught people to silently accept poor voice quality. It doesn't happen all the time with all numbers, so I end up working around the problem and checking periodically. It's really frustrating!

I called my friend using BroadVoice and he said the audio quality was bad. (It consisently is bad with him). Then I immediately called him back using VoipJet. The call quality was fine. That seems to rule out my local set up and my internet connection. The source and destination paths of the call were identical, the only difference was the VOIP provider.

My bottom line is that it isn't my fault. Others may or may not be noticing it, since cell phones have gotten people used to poor audio quality and because it doesn't affect all numbers. And finally BV is still having some serious problems even though this isn't listed on their service web page.

I think they are still tuning and optimizing their servers and call termination routes for optimum performance with their new curriers so I expect it to get better soon. Also note that I do not experience these problems on all my calls so I think it is already showing signs of getting better, so it is kind of a wait and see type of situation.

BV rep said today they are totally aware of their call quality as he said their new carrier's pipe is smaller then Global Crossing was. I asked him first if they were still sticking to the best codex, he said yes, but nope, just the pipe being smaller for everyone to fit through. IE> BV is just being cheap.
