Default ATA 186 help

Hello,

I have an ATA 186 that I have been using with Free world Dialup for 2 years witout a problem. I have been trying to get it to work with Broadvoice, but after many calls and hours of customer service help, I still cant get a dialtone.

The only thing I can think of is that the firmware on the ATA needs to be upgraded. it is v 1.6 and I know there is a version 3. After calling Cisco, they suggested I buy a 70$ service contract then buy the upgrade !!

Is there any easier/cheaper way to upgrade the firmware on the ATA? Has anyone had similar problems with the ATA and Broadvoice?

Any help would be greatly apreciated !!

John

Default RE: ATA 186 help

I've doen this in the past, I have an account with IConnecthere which I use as backup when my DSL connection is acting up and I have to switch to Dialup. Sign up with an ICH account (its free), they have instructions on their site for firmware upgrade. At the end of the upgrade process, they'll lock you out of ATA. Get their support (either thru phone, or now they have a very good live chat support feature), and get your Admin password. Now u're good to go!!!. Reset, configure BV ...

Can you get into the admin screen on the box, or is it locked?

If you can get in, you can find links to an older version firmware (which should be ok) here: http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Asteri...e+cisco+ATA18x .

You will need to Google around to find instructions to setup a tFTP server to be able to serve the file to your ATA (after you redirect the ATA to your TFTP server's address, of course).

If the device is locked, you're out of luck.

I upgraded mine by Googleing around. I found a page that gave the IP address of a server that someone else was running, you just have to pick up the phone, enter a code followed by the IP address, and it will upgrade it.

Edit-

Just to help you, here is the info I used to get me started (from http://www.tmcnet.com/it/0703/0703CC.htm...

"First, I should point out that 1,0,0,# are the DTMF keys to get into the upgrade menu on the ATA-186. Thus, using the keywords: cisco ATA 1,0,0,# brought up a few good results for upgrading the ATA-186 over an IP connection. Simply by touch-toning 213*137*73*159*8000# on the ATA, I was able to connect to the TFTP server to upgrade my ATA-186s firmware across the Internet. Whether or not I have a legitimately licensed ATA-186 at this point is unclear, but Im doing this merely for testing purposes and don't plan on keeping the ATAs SIP firmware loaded without asking for Cisco's permission first."

Try this one at your own risk... it *should* be ok, but it *may* also end up locking you to that provider (oops).

1. Pick up the phone and press the button on the ATA. You will hear the prompt "Configuration Menu".
2. Press 1 0 0 # to access the upgrade menu.
3. Enter the following information into the phone exactly as listed: 213*137*73*74*8000#
4. After a short time (up to 5 minutes), you will hear the words "Upgrade Successful".
5. Your software has been upgraded successfully. To read the software version again, press 123#.

Stick with the Iconnecthere method, you know what you're getting, others might lock you and you won't know where to go to get unlocked, With ICH, the instructions are crystal clear, and ICH are obliged to give you unlock code if u're using ur own device.

The second posting is actually the information from IConnectHere. According to the directions at least, if you only do the firmware upgrade it won't lock your device.

They actually tell you to try upgrading firmware before you open an account and attach the device to it.

Yarnia,

Does that still work?. I know, sometime ago, ICH didn't have remote provisionig available, and at that time, you had to manually upgrade the firmware, as well as setup the account information in the ATA. Now, they have remote provisioning working, and actually ask you to enter the devices MAC address, at which point, the upgrade and your SIP credentials are setup in the ATA. I'm not sure if the two can be done independantly now.

Well, I dunno. It should since they still have it on their site under the open-access-plan...

http://www.iconnecthere.com/nonmembe...ccess_plan.htm

Click on Cisco ATA 186

I used their server about 6-8 months ago to upgrade an old Vonage ATA that I finally got them to unlock for me.

As long as you stop after the firmware upgrade and don't follow their directions for enabling and setting the tFTP server for remote provisioning, it should be ok. Worst case it locks him to ICH and he contacts them for the password after setting up the account (since you said they will provide this).
