Probably when they can pass touchtones someway other than INBAND, which appears to be the default.

I understand that G726-32 may be a very disirable codec but I'm not an expert on these things and wonder why:
1 - tones by INBAND makes a difference; and,
2 - is this "default" a BV default, and if so why?

Does this mean the BV will not likely have this kind of codec until they fundamentally alter the way they handle traffic?

TIA,
- Don

i don't know anything about inband, but i do know you can use G726-32 on the chicago proxy for *outbound* calls. and outband calls obviosly use touchtones.

INBAND DTMF matters because the compression would totally obscure the touch tones audio. Other, out-of-band methods are preferable, even with G.711.

My guess is that not all of BroadVoices call termination partners support out-of-band DTMF methods.

Unfortunately, this is not true. Making a call does not pass DTMF through your VoIP provider. Your DTMF presses go to your ATA, where they are transformed into a SIP call request packet to be forwarded to your VoIP provider. You need to pass DTMF through your VoIP provider when you are calling your bank, your airline, your SPA-3000, or anywhere else the phone is answered by an IVR.

Thanks for all your continuing explanations on all these techno-bizarre bits.

I notice that BV requires the "*" codes to be directed to them rather than interpretted by the ATA, apparently unlike other VOIP providers.

Of course, so long as BV uses no compression (with their standard G711u), then this might not be a problem. However, as some of us would apparently like to use one or another of the compression type codecs, how does this fit with the "inband" question?

Am I just totally confused (and compressed)?

TIA,
- Don

What password other than the admin password do I need to make changes to my Grandstream ATA? BV has provided me with the admin password but I can only view the device configuration. Any changes I make are not applied to the device since it is provisioned by BV automatically. Any way for me to get access to making the changes myself?
