Default Voice dropouts with Asterisk 1.4.x on Linux 2.6.25 (Fedora 8)

I've narrowed it down I hope.... but I'm getting voice dropouts with a couple of providers (Future-Nine and RapidVox). I can be on a call, and at some poin, for 10 seconds or so, one side will lose the audio.

To isolate the problem, I took my Linksys SPA941 phone and programmed one its liens to go directly to the provider. This solves the dropout problem.

The Asterisk box is directly connected to the Internet (no NAT), and that box is also that router for the LAN (Shorewall). Thus, even the directly connected 941 uses the router.

From this I'm led to believe:

1. It's not the network adapters dropping packets etc because the SPA still uses it.
2. It's not the provider because bypassing Asterisk solves the issue

Nothing in the system logs shows anything I can see to cause this. Smartd reports no errors of note, nothing funny is showing up in the logs. The provider (Future-Nine) did not they've seen this with Asterisk, but not everyone has it.

1. What can I do to further isolate this
2. What can I do to correct it

Many thanks.
