Default URGENT! Removing Cent OS from my Asterisk box!

Hello there,

I'am Asterisk at home user with very little knowledge of linux and servers. I need urgent help with the following situation.

I was running Asterisk@Home 1.0 and yesterday I upgraded to Asterisk@Home 1.5, using the tar file.

It all works fine but the installation also installed a second copy of the operating system, instead of using or upgrading the old one.

Now, every time I reboot the server I get the Cent OS welcome page with the two Operating Systems listed and I need to choose which one to use.

If I select the old one asterisk won't work, but it will if I select the new one.

The problem, of course, is that the highlighted version of the OS is the old one, so if I don't manually scroll down to select the new OS, the server will use the old one, and won't work.

I regularly reset my server from another location and this dual boot is totally unwanted!!

Is there a way I can safely remove the old OS and only leave the new one?

Or, if not, can I change the order in which the two OS's are listed so that the new one is the highlighted one?

Thank you guys for the help, hope someone knows how to do this!

Best regards
Manny

Log in to the system as root
Go to /etc/boot/grub
edit grub.conf
You'll see a line that says
default=0
change it to
default=1
and save the file

Both kernels are installed, but now it will default to the one you want.

That should do it for you.

Removing the extra kernel all together is also doable, but I need some more information to tell you what to do. Try doing:
rpm -q kernel
and let us know what shows up. That'll get you started.

It's not really a seperate operating system but a seperate kernel.
CentOS (base off redhat)'s yum update *should* auto-magically get you the newest linux kernel and modify your grub.conf to point to the newest one. When you reboot your asterisk box, look at the version number to see which one is highlighted by default. If the version number is default to the lower one, you can modify your /boot/grub/grub.conf

[command]
# nano /boot/grub/grub.conf

you will see stuff like

default=0
timeout=10

and bunch of

title CentOS blah blah blah

each title is a version of your kernel
the first one is 0, 2nd one is 1 and so on

now edit your default to the one you want to boot.

I hope you understand what I just type...

thank you thank you thank you to both of you guys.

I'll try and let you know what happens. Fingers crossed!

Hearing you talk about grun and yum and kernels gets me lost (eh eh) but I always manage to do techy things even when I know very little, so lt's give it a go!

Thanks again
