Scambaiting; new sport for asterisk users! OK. it isn't exactly new, but Asterisk brings it to a whole new level. Scambaiting is the art of taking online scammers and totally wasting their time, money and resources. Asterisk allows you to be whoever you want to be; wherever you want to be with complete anonymity (when properly configured). For tips on the scams, go to 419eater.com, a UK based scambaiter site ("419" refers to the Nigerian penal code for scamming). Next, pick through your spam for someone offering to send you a few million dollars for you cooperation in moving funds abroad. Next, tell your friends and brainstorm some ideas. Then bait.
You get extra points for:
Getting the scammer to send you a picture of him or her as a "trophy" (tip: make them hold up a sign of your design).
Getting the scammer to spend money (tip: book a hotel room for you)
Physical threats and insults (email or voicemail acceptable)
Running up their long distance bill (tip: sipgate offers incoming toll accounts in the UK)
Meeting you at a nude beach in France (yes, this has been done!)
I'm new to this but I'm having a hell of a time. The pros at this are good, but Asterisk puts you in a class by itself! My "lad" shall very shortly be calling the US of A to be put on indefinite hold while listening to Donna Fargo singing "The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA" over and over. He then will meet me at an airfield in the UK hoping to see me wearing a red baseball cap (the particular airfield happens to be having a huge airshow that day; good luck finding me). Public service has never been so much fun! |
