Default Programming Asterisk

Is there any interface on Astrisk that will let me control it from other linux applications? For example I would like to call two sip numbers and connect them together. When someone goes off hook and presses #1 I want to send an email and stuff like that.

Yes, it has the management port that allows you to send any command to Asterisk. You'd use that to control asterisk in your own code.

Also take a look at AstMan and FOP (Flash Operator Panel) as applications that externally control Asterisk.
