Default Asterisk@Home 2.8/FreePBX/Tribox

I've been asleep for a few months and have missed this Tribox thing!

I'm using FreePBX. Is it worth switching to Tribox?

What is the difference between FreePBX and Tribox??

Thanks

Brian.

FreePBX is an add-on front end configuration tool for Asterisk that is "standard equipment" in the TrixBox compilation.

I am the wrong one to ask about upgrading. My philosophy is, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I tend to stay with a stable release and only upgrade when there is a feature I desire in the new release (and it has been proven stable). As such, I last upgraded from Asterisk 1.0.7 to 1.2.5 because 1.2.0 introduced a feature I was looking forward to. I have resisted going beyond that because 1.2.6 removes some legacy commands from the syntax and I have not yet converted all of my scripts to the new syntax. I will be doing so shortly, though, because there is a feature I need that is only available in 1.2.9 now.

I have not installed TrixBox on my PC for several reasons. First, my production Asterisk runs on very old equipment, and I have only been able to do clean installations by using Asterisk@Home. Second, TrixBox, as a compilation, does not yet have a reputation for stability. Third I'm not inclined to install the first release of anything, even if it purports to be an evolutionary improvement over something I am comfortable with.

As for preserving my configuration, I used a feature of Asterisk@Home for the first time. Asterisk@Home performs a nightly backup, storing all of the configuration files it knows about in a .tar.gz file. I copied this file to a PC for safekeeping and copied it back to the Asterisk server after the new reinstallation was complete. I then used Asterisk@Home's restore utility to get these files back into the system. I had to reconstruct my Dynamic DNS, /etc/hosts, crontab and webmin after that, but it the backup shortened the ordeal by more than an hour.

I think I shall take your good advice and will stick with the FreeBPX for the moment.

I'm new to Linux. If I run the backup, how do I copy the .tar.gz file to a pc on the network?

Thanks

Brian

I use CoreFTP, an SSH capable SFTP client, to move files in and out of my Linux boxes. It's free.
